Navigating a sexed-up world: How can we help our young people resist harmful messages from media and pop culture and aspire them to have respectful relationships?

Pembroke warmly invites parents to a public presentation by Melinda Tankard Reist and Daniel Principe from Collective Shout.

Melinda is an author, speaker, media commentator, and advocate for young people. She is best known for her work addressing sexualisation, objectification, harms of pornography, sexual exploitation, trafficking, and violence against women. She is co-founder and movement director of the grassroots campaigning movement, Collective Shout.

Daniel is a passionate youth advocate and educator. He champions boys across Australia to challenge culture and aspire to live courageous, respectful, and empathetic lives. Daniel is a trained health professional with a strong background in PR, marketing, media, and health advocacy. Daniel has joined Melinda Tankard Reist in her work in schools across Australia.

Parents are noticing children are growing up too fast, are worried about their appearance and more aware of sexual issues at earlier ages. Children and young people are bombarded with hypersexualised messages from media and popular culture. The lives of young people are increasingly socialised, conditioned, and informed by exposure to online porn before their first kiss.

Drawing from current global literature and the experiences of young people, Melinda and Daniel will explore how the proliferation of sexualised images and messages contributes to a distorted view of bodies, relationships, and sexuality and how this can hamper their physical, emotional, and social development. They assist parents in addressing this toxic culture and provide practical tips on raising happy, healthy, and resilient young people.
